The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (Sadtu) is calling for the closure of schools after more than 180 learners at the Makaula Senior Secondary School in Mount Frere in the Eastern Cape tested positive for the Coronavirus.
This as some Grade 7 and Grade 12 learners returned to school on Monday 8 June.
The Eastern Cape education department has been forced to close 196 schools since reopening of schools.
Eastern Cape education department spokesperson Mvusiwekhaya Sicwetsha says the school will be disinfected.
Moreover, the province is the second hardest hit province after the Western Cape in terms of Covid-19 related deaths with 303 fatalities and over 16 000 cases.
