Bill Gates, the Microsoft co-founder, and his wife Melinda have announced they are ending their marriage after 27 years. The pair say they no longer believe they can grow together as a couple.
The couple shared that the decision in a sad note on their social media accounts on Monday, in which they said the fate of their marriage would not affect the work of their foundation, the world’s largest private charitable organisation. The billionaire couple jointly runs the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.The organisation has spent billions encouraging vaccinations in children, especially on the African continent.
The pair both posted the statement announcing their divorce on Twitter.” Over the last 27 years, we have raised three incredible children and built a foundation that works all over the world to enable all people to lead healthy, productive lives,” it read. “We continue to share a belief in that mission and will continue our work together at the foundation, but we no longer believe we can grow together as a couple in the next phase of our lives. “We ask for space and privacy for our family as we begin to navigate this new life.”
The couple have three children and jointly run the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
They got married in 1994 on the Hawaiian island of Lanai, reportedly hiring up all the local helicopters to stop unwanted guests flying over.
