Queues as South African shoppers stock-up for lockdown


Social distancing for what, and for who? South Africans are making the most of their final day before lockdown, as thousands head to the shops on Thursday. For many, this is the last chance to purchase booze and cigarettes before we’re confined to our homes – but stores will stay open, selling essential goods.

Shoppers have been warned against panic-buying, but some still continue to stockpile. Makro, once again, have been affected by the chaos. Long queues and stockpiling were evident at some of their branches, and despite their best efforts to enforce social distancing, a number of citizens continued to flout the rules
