Cyber Criminals a threat during lockdown

Cyber experts say that criminals are exploiting the need for news and information around the coronavirus to defraud customers.  On Thursday the experts warned South Africans, saying that a sharp increase in cybercrime had been noticed.  They urged consumers to be vigilant when receiving any suspicious emails or SMSes.

Cyber criminals are using the Covid-19 pandemic to defraud citizens.  They ask for assistance with medical treatments, funds to buy masks, and requesting financial assistance to purchase protective gear.  Those that are lonely and looking for romance online have also become easy targets, and the experts cautioned people not to share any personal information, or make payments to any person they have not met.

Lerato Mbopane, a Cyber expert, said companies are also targeted where criminals attempt to gain access to emails.

“What they do is create a sense of panic, urging clients to make payments or give banking details or to deliver stock at new addresses.”
