As the country enters day 11 of the national lockdown, the South African Police Service say selfish South Africans not adhering to lockdown regulations are putting the lives of many people at risk.

Newlyweds , their priest and over 40 guests were arrested outside Richards Bay in KwaZulu-Natal at the weekend. This is despite regulations prohibiting weddings for 21 days during the lockdown period.

Speaking to Neo Leeuw on Sunday’s POWER Perspective, national police spokesperson Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo says police will continue to enforce the law until people comply with the lockdown regulations.

“It’s not about arresting people. It’s about trying to make people aware and understand they need to comply because they are putting their lives and the lives of others at risk. It’s not that we putting police there to arrest people.” “We’ve made all these sacrifices but people that don’t comply are being selfish to the sacrifices the country is making to curb the spread of this virus,” says Naidoo.

As of Monday morning, police have arrested 17 209 people since the beginning of the lockdown.
